Short course on Health Research Ethics

The conduct of health research is regulated by internationally agreed ethical guidelines and regulations. In Tanzania ethics guidelines and regulations are in place and operational. The National Institute for Medical Research is mandated to coordinate, control and manage health research.
The National Health Research Ethics Committee and Tanzania National Health Research Forum are organizing the 2nd Bioethics Short Courses on Health Research Ethics. The course aims to impart knowledge to researchers before they embark on conducting research. This 5-day course will be conducted from 15th to 19th February 2016 at CEEMI Hall within National Institute for Medical Research Head Quarters complex located at 3 Barack Obama Drive in Dar es Salaam.

Course Objectives

  1. To enhance the knowledge of participants on the coordination of health research in Tanzania
  2. To enhance knowledge of participants on international and national regulatory frameworks of health research ethics
  3. To enhance skills of participants in conducting ethically sound health research

Course Topics

  1. Health research coordination in Tanzania: Mandates of National Health Research Ethics Committee
  2. The role of Institutional Research Ethics Committees
  3. International framework regulating research with human participants
  4. Elements of an ethical health research proposal
  5. Introduction to good clinical and laboratory practice in health research
  6. Informed consent and confidentiality issues
  7. Ethical considerations in research with special and vulnerable populations
  8. Handling of research materials and data
  9. Intellectual property rights in health research

Course Outcomes
At the end of this course, participants will have strengthened knowledge on the following aspects:

  • International and national regulatory frameworks of health research ethics.
  • The coordination of health research in Tanzania.
  • Conduct of ethically sound health research
  • Understand research ethics and the importance of protecting research participants

Training Methodology
The course outcomes will be achieved through lectures, group work, problem- based learning, practical and case studies.

Target Participants
This course is intended for any individual who is interested in health research in Tanzania, including but not limited to members of Institutional Research Ethics Committees, researchers, trainers, consultants, health care professionals, health program staff, project officers, lecturers, council and regional health management teams and graduate students.

Each participant is required to contribute TShs. 600,000 (Six Hundred Thousands only) to cater for tuition, learning materials, mid and afternoon teas and lunch. In addition participants will bear other costs that are not mentioned here such as transport and accommodation in Dar es Salaam.

Certificate of attendance recognized by the Tanzania National Health Research Ethics Committee will be awarded to all successful participants.
